چکیده

After our studies on the distribution of water, nitrogen and electrolytes in the whole skin, it was thought that the different layers of the skin should be investigated separately. The epidermis was therefore separated from the corium and the nitrogen and electrolyte distribution was determined in each of the layers In view of the fact that adequate literature on the methods for the separation of epidermis from dermis exists in the paper by Baumberger, Suntzeff and Cowdry (1), no formal review of the earlier work will be given. In choosing a method for the separation of epidermis from corium for chemical analyses, we have to be guided by many considerations such as loss of water; chemical change within the epidermis or dermis during the separation; or shifting of water and electrolytes from one layer to the other, previous to and during the separation. The method of separation that we used is not entirely satisfactory. In addition to the loss of water during the separation, there is a possibility of chemical change within the epidermis during the separation. The analytical data as well as the derived data presented here show that the corium layer of the skin has a chemical composition differing so radically from the epidermis that, when analyzed together, as they must be in whole skin analyses, the changes in the corium may mask changes or lack of changes in the epidermis. This report supplies chemical data on the whole skin, coriurn and epidermis. These data have been interpreted histochemically and are believed to provide at least a first approximation of (1) the relative mass of the two layers in the whole skin; (2) the amount of fibrillary material in each of the layers; and (3) the distribution of electrolytes in the layers.

Local Increase of Pigmentation in the Skin of CBA Mice by the Application of Benzene *

The skin of a normal adult black-agouti (gray) mouse appears to be dull white in color. On the surface, however, small patches of black are to be seen at certain exposed sites, such as, in the male, on the tip of the penis and on the end of the scrotum, and, in the female, on the dorsal lip of the vagina. Other larger black areas may be made out in the skin after the hair has been removed. With...

Evaluation of chitosan gel on burn wound healing and keratinocytes function

Skin burns are common skin injuries that can result from exposure to various sources of heat by which, depending on the cause, different degrees of burns are generated. In restoration of superficial burns by re-epithelialization, the skin is rebuilt, but the skin color is different than the healthy tissue. Keratinocytes represent the major cells of the epidermis. These cells are sourced from ec...

55-Week Treatment of Mice with the Unani and Ayurvedic Medicine Pomegranate Flower Ameliorates Ageing-Associated Insulin Resistance and Skin Abnormalities

PPARs play a pivotal role in regulating lipid and glucose homeostasis and are involved in diverse biological activities in skin. Pomegranate flower (PGF, an antidiabetic therapy in Unani and Ayurvedic medicines) has been previously demonstrated to activate both PPARalpha/gamma. Here, we found that treatment of mice with the diet containing PGF powder over 55 weeks attenuated ageing-induced abno...

Effects of multiple freezing and refrigerator thawing cycles on the quality changes of sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax)

The freezing-thawing effect on the meat quality of whole, gutted and fillets of sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) were investigated. It was aimed to investigate the changes in the meat quality of whole, gutted and fillets of sea bass in multiple frozen (-18±2ºC) and thawed cycles in refrigerated conditions (4±2°C). The meat quality assessment of the sea bass groups (whole, gutted and fillets) sub...

A Study on free convective heat and mass transfer flow through a highly porous medium with radiation, chemical reaction and Soret effects

The paper addresses the effects of Soret on unsteady free convection flow of a viscous incompressible fluid through a porous medium with high porosity bounded by a vertical infinite moving plate under the influence of thermal radiation, chemical reaction, and heat source. The fluid is considered to be gray, absorbing, and emitting but non-scattering medium, and Rosseland approximation is consid...
